Norton AntiVirus 2000
Given Norton AntiVirus's leading role in this category for so many years, I gave the product a particularly hard time. What was the result of this admittedly unfair approach? Norton still won. This product is very good at what it does. It detected and dealt with every virus fired at it, including those inside zips. Whenever it couldn't clean a file, it offered clear options, including quarantining the file. The Quarantine Console then provided control over all suspect files. Its real-time email monitoring is excellent (although make sure you use LiveUpdate to download the latest patch for this) and it protects against malicious ActiveX and Java applets. Norton's is the only product that provides easy-to-use batch disinfection, and every process and alert is clearly designed. At no time are you left wondering what to do with an infected file that's been discovered. The only negative aspect I found is that the program slows your application noticeably when it opens documents that contain suspect macros. Once the document is cleaned or opened, though, things get back up to speed again.
Norton is highly configurable, has excellent reporting, and lets you choose from a good list of preset scans. The product is rounded out by excellent documentation that includes useful videos and adjustable Bloodhound technology for tracking unknown viruses. After finishing my testing, Norton was the product I decided to reinstall on my computer for ongoing use. Need I say more?
